National Sorry Day - 26 May
Posted on May 26, 2026
National Sorry Day, held each year on 26 May, is an important day for all Australians to learn about and reflect on the experiences of the Stolen Generations. It is a time to acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities, and Country under past government policies, and to recognise the ongoing impact this has had on individuals, families, and communities across generations.
National Sorry Day also honours the strength, resilience, and courage of Stolen Generations Survivors and their families. For many people, the effects of separation, loss of culture, identity, language, and connection to family are still felt today. By learning about this history, we can better understand the importance of truth-telling, respect, healing, and reconciliation.
This year’s theme, From Sorry to Action, encourages all Australians to move beyond words and continue taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation. While saying sorry is important, action is also needed to support healing, build understanding, and create a future based on respect and equality.
As a school community, National Sorry Day is an opportunity for students, staff, and families to learn together, listen to First Nations voices, and reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation in our everyday actions. Through education, understanding, and respect, we can help create a stronger and more connected future for all Australians.
